Kalkar, a picturesque small town in Germay, only a stone's throw away from the Dutch border near Arnhem, achieved notoriety in the 1980. The German government had built a nuclear reprocressing plant in this quite densly populated area but somehow forgot to inform the public accordingly which resulted in weeklong clashes between protestors and riot police. With upcoming elections the government finally decided not to phase the plant in but instead sell it to a private investor who converted it into a holiday park.
Ferry ports:
Amsterdam, Holland (from Newcastle) -- 2 hours drive to Kalkar
Rotterdam (Europort or Hoek of Holland), Holland (from Hull or Harwich) – 2 hours drive to Kalkar
Calais, France (from Dover) – 4 hours drive to Kalkar
Alternatively you can use the Euro Tunnel from Folkstone to Calais.
Directions from ferry ports (travelling through Holland):
Whether you are coming from Calais, Amsterdam, Rotterdam or anywhere else west of Kalkar cross the Dutch/German border near Arnhem via Dutch motorway A12 (E36). Once in Germany the designation of that very same motorway changes to A3 (though still E36). Stay on it, take the second exit in Germany “Rees/Kalkar” and keep going towards Kalkar. The Wunderland Kalkar is signposted.
